Rosenthal Paper Bag Vases/Design: Tapio Wirkkala
To celebrate the 100th birthday of the great designer Tapio Wirkkala, Rosenthal released one of the Finn's most popular creations in coloured porcelain paste for the first time 2015. The range is now being updated with four new on-trend colours to complement the previous shades of mint, peach, macaroon and dove, making the iconic object from 1977 one of this season's it pieces. The design, which imitates the structure and feel of a paper bag and was originally available in brown and white, has now been released in an intense deep blue hue and a hip stone shade as well as a friendly light blue tone (azure) and a trendy pink colour (rosé).
Rosenthal Suomi/Design: Timo Sarpanevo
The porcelain service "Suomi" created by the Finnish designer Timo Sarpaneva was celebrated as a milestone in the history of the Rosenthal. "Suomi" embodies the Rosenthal standard for excellent design and the creation of lasting values and authenticity.
Sarpaneva stands for a clear language of form, which is influenced by nature without, however, trying to imitate it. Soft flowing forms, a distinct feeling for materials and the desire for aesthetic perfection distinguish his designs. "Suomi" has gone through many stages in its development over the years. The result is an impeccable creation, in which the individual set elements all work in perfect harmony.
Suomi New Generation Ardesia – design: Timo Sarpaneva
The new decoration on the timeless, avant-garde Suomi range follows the popular trend for black-and-white design. The matte-black gives way towards the edges to a modern pattern broken up with white, which lends the collection vibrancy and energy. But the most impressive feature is the edge itself, where professional and hobby chefs alike can use food colourings to write messages, thereby engaging in a unique dialogue with their guests.
The new matte design is available exclusively for Suomi New Generation, whose plates feature a wider rim and harmonise perfectly with the puristic, Scandinavian style of the existing Suomi collection pieces.
Timo Sarpaneva (1926–2006) was a painter, graphic artist and designer who, since the 1950s, was one of the leading exponents of Scandinavian handicrafts. In addition to functional design, he was particularly interested in exploring the possibilities of glass as a sculptural medium, unfettered by the restrictions of functional design. When designing the compact, organic Suomi design in 1976, Sarpaneva was inspired by the round, smooth pebbles found on Finland’s coasts. Suomi has been added to the permanent collection of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris as an example of contemporary design.
